Why are bagpipes played?
The Great Highland Bagpipes are traditionally played for fallen members of the uniformed services, including police, fire, EMS, and others. The early police and fire departments of the United States contained many members of Scot and Irish descent.
The bagpipes were always an integral part of both the Scot and Irish lifestyle. As the United States became larger, and other nationalities were added to the uniformed services, the tradition of playing the bagpipes expanded to include anyone in the uniformed services.
In the Scot and Irish tradition, the bagpipes have always been associated with the aristocracy of the societies. The Clan Chief had personal pipers who accompanied him on excursions, while another piper stayed at the castle.
Kings and Queens have personal pipers who accompany them on all of their trips and awake them each morning.
The British military have pipers who appear at almost every formal function.
